The Inca citadel of Machupicchu is the best known arqeological and historical Inca site. The site lies at the center of an impressive landscape, located in one of the most spectacular settings in South America and contains some of the best finest structures built in Pre- Columbian times.

Was discovered by science in 1911 by the American _born historian Hiram Bingham.

Led to the development of a growing tourist industry from about 1950.

In 1981,in recognition of the cultural and natural wonders to which they are home the 32,592 hectares of spectacular scenery that surround the archeological site were declared a protected natural area , under the category of National Protected Area and Historical Sanctuary. Two years later, in 1983 the UNESCO (world heritage committee declared the Machupicchu Historical sanctuary (MPHS) a natural and cultural world heritage site, presents the visitor with a unique opportunity to study orchids. The network of Inca trail offers a unique infrastructure which allows walkers to visit a variety of life zones, from high altitude grasslands to cloud forest.

The ancient Inca roads were still in surprisingly excellent condition, smaller side roads had been cost to luxuriant cloud forest vegetation from 3000 to 4000 mts near the base of the eternal snow-covered peak of mts Salcantay (6,271m/ 20,574 ft) and by dense, montage, subtropical vegetation along the Vilcabamba river below; the ruins of Ollantaytambo in the depths of the still agriculturally rich sacred valley.
